Why You Need a Clean Air Filter
The air filter in your air conditioning system serves a vital role — it removes any airborne particles in your home and prevents debris from entering the AC system. Over time with regular use, the air filter becomes clogged with household dirt, debris and dust. If the air filter is not regularly replaced or cleaned, it begins to circulate unclean air throughout your home.
Whether you have a reusable or disposable air filter, it needs to be routinely cleaned. Depending on the type of system, this is every three to six months on average. During summer when your AC is likely always on, it should be cleaned every one to two months. Anyone with asthma or respiratory illnesses may be affected with an increased level of dirt and debris in your home. If cleaning your filter is no longer enough, you may need to consider air filter replacement.
Evaporator Coil 101
What exactly does an evaporator coil do? It is the heat exchanger unit in your air conditioning system. An evaporator coil extracts hot air within your home and transfers it outside to the condenser unit which circulates cool air back inside. A coolant such as Freon or Puron runs through the evaporator coil.
Like an air filter, an evaporator coil also needs to be kept clean. When too much dust and dirt accumulates, a buffer is created between the coolant and the air which makes it less efficient. When the evaporator coil is completely covered in debris, it might cease to produce cold air altogether. An inefficient AC system is hard on your wallet and the environment. If your air conditioner has stopped producing consistent cold air, it may be time to for an evaporator coil replacement.
