When to Call for a Replacement Appointment
Whether your furnace is completely busted or it just isn’t working how it used to, you may be wondering if you need a complete replacement or if you can get by with a few repairs. There are several factors that can help you determine whether or not you will need a new furnace:
- Age of the furnace
- Broken part(s)
- Planned move
Gas furnaces typically last 15-20 years before needing to be replaced. Electric can last 20-30 years. If your furnace is nearing the upper end of either of these estimates, it may save you money in the long run to replace rather than repair, especially if you plan on staying in your home long-term. Sometimes repairs can hold you over for at least the next winter, which may be all you need if you are planning to move soon anyway. However, repairs on older machines are not always guaranteed to last a long time, so this decision can be a risk.
If your unit is between 1 and 15 years old, a small repair can help it last much longer. Always check the warranty on your unit before replacing. Most include a 10 year warranty, so repairs will be covered as long as proper maintenance was performed at regular intervals.
There are certain parts that cost enough in repair to make an upgrade more worth it in the end. These are the blower motor and heat exchanger. The main blower motor can cost up to $1,400 to repair and/or replace. Likewise, the heat exchanger can cost up to $1,500 to repair and/or replace. If either of these are the issue with an older furnace, it may be more cost-effective to replace the whole furnace rather than spot-treat these items. Again, repairing parts on an older unit doesn’t always guarantee that something else won’t go wrong in a few months. If you aren’t sure what is wrong with your furnace or you want us to provide you with replacement versus repair estimates, just give us a call and we will evaluate the status of your furnace.
